Amoxicillin and contraceptive pill

The women who were treated with amox/clav were found to have a small increased chance for a serious bacterial infection known as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in their newborns.

This is a condition that can injure a baby’s intestines. Further review has found some studies that confirm this chance and others that do not.

Overall, the chance that the use of amox/clav increases the risk of NEC is low. Does taking amox/clav in pregnancy cause any long-term problems in behavior or learning for the baby?

One study that has followed hundreds of children up to age 11 years did not find that prenatal exposure to amox/clav was linked to learning or behavior problems. Amox/clav enters the breast milk, however, based on a small number of studies; it has not been shown to cause problems for a nursing baby.

A study of 67 mothers taking this product found that there were no serious health effects in the breastfeeding infants. While some babies had a possible allergic reaction, such as rash, diarrhea, irritability and constipation, the reactions did not last long.

If you think your baby has developed a side effect from medication that might be in your milk, talk to your child’s healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider about all your breastfeeding questions.

If a man takes amox/clav, could it affect his fertility (ability to get partner pregnant) or increase the chance of birth defects? There are no studies looking at possible risks to a pregnancy when the father takes amox/clav. In general, exposures that fathers have are unlikely to increase risks to a pregnancy. What is the most important information I should know about amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium? You should not use this medicine if you have severe kidney disease, if you have had liver problems or jaundice while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, or if you are allergic to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, such as Amoxil, Ceftin, Cefzil, Moxatag, Omnicef, and others.

Clavulanate potassium helps prevent certain bacteria from becoming resistant to amoxicillin.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a combination medicine used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium? You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to it, or if: you have severe kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis); you have had liver problems or jaundice while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium; or you are allergic to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, such as Amoxil, Ceftin, Cefzil, Moxatag, Omnicef, and others. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: liver disease (hepatitis or jaundice); kidney disease; or mononucleosis. The liquid or chewable tablet may contain phenylalanine.

Tell your doctor if you have phenylketonuria (PKU). Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm, cervical cap, or contraceptive sponge) to prevent pregnancy.

Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.

How should I take amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium? Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium may work best if you take it at the start of a meal.

Swallow the pill whole, or break the pill in half and take both halves one at a time. Tell your doctor if you have trouble swallowing a whole or half pill.

You must chew the chewable tablet before you swallow it. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) before you measure a dose.

Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device (not a kitchen spoon). This medicine can affect the results of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve.

Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold. Store the tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, skin rash, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and decreased urination.

What are the possible side effects of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).

Call your doctor at once if you have: severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it occurs months after your last dose); pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness; loss of appetite, upper stomach pain; little or no urination; or easy bruising or bleeding.

Common side effects may include: nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; rash, itching; vaginal itching or discharge; or diaper rash.

You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. What other drugs will affect amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium?

Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially: allopurinol; probenecid; or a blood thinner --warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven. Other drugs may affect amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

From Fighting for Freedom to Fighting Drug-Resistance to Save Modern Medicine – Part Two. Volunteer Vicki Joughin, Antibiotic Research UK’s marketing and media consultant wrote in her last article reflecting on the 75 th Anniversary of VE Day. She explained the importance of penicillin in the fight for freedom and the part it played in helping the Allied Forces achieve victory in Europe.

Today Vicki focuses on the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the impact it is having on “Modern Medicine”. She discusses antibiotics and coronavirus, and the importance of keeping antibiotics working during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.

Currently, we find ourselves in another global war and this time an invisible one as we battle the coronavirus pandemic.

Yet again we have seen remarkable collaboration between scientists globally as they research this new virus (coronavirus) and the disease it causes (COVID-19). Whilst we race against time to find a vaccine and COVID-19 treatments in many countries, scientists are sharing information and governments are collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry to provide a not-for-profit solution.

Once again, the focus of these collaborations are on the healthcare solution, rather than the economic impact. In the meantime, many have lost their lives before their time, not only due to the coronavirus itself but also because it opens to the door to opportunistic or secondary bacterial infections which may be fatal if not treated with effective antibiotics.

However, drug-resistant infections are cited by the WHO as one of the biggest threats to global health today, estimating 700,000 annual global deaths, rising to 10 million by 2050. In the post war era, antibiotics have revolutionised the field of medicine.

They enabled successful treatments such as chemotherapy for cancer patients and making routine surgery a safer option e.g.

The healthcare treatments that we know and have been used to accessing, are often referred to as “ Modern Medicine ”. Canon David Staples shared his memories of the healthcare system during the war years: “The healthcare system was very different then. When you had an illness you spent long periods in bed, sweating it out as healthcare was not free and many could not afford access to the medical men who often worked as one man bands from wooden sheds in their back gardens.” Today “Modern Medicine” as we know it is taken for granted. The current pandemic has shown us how much we rely on our National Health Service, which is free for everyone at point of care. In the war years, this was not the case as Canon David Staples recalls: “I knew children at school whose parents couldn’t afford a doctor and relied on an unqualified “grandmother” who lived up the street who had convinced everyone (including herself) that she was the font of all knowledge!” In this current crisis, many of the treatments we have become so used to are unavailable due to the high risks to these patients of contracting COVID-19.

There is now evidence that 15% of deaths in Wuhan were due to opportunistic or secondary bacterial infections. Antibiotics do not kill viruses but they should be effective against bacterial infections. Yet, the global public health crisis of drug- resistant infections has not yet been recognised as being worthy of not-for-profit collaborations such as the WWII Penicillin Project or the current coronavirus projects.

Antibiotics and coronavirus research is just as important to continued global health as the penicillin project.

Research into new treatments for drug-resistant infections is critical to the future of “Modern Medicine”.

Our program of work has the ultimate aims of improving quality, supply and acceptability of existing formulations of BPG, and of developing a novel long-acting penicillin formulation.

Some of the substudies in this program include: Penicillin Levels for Rheumatic Heart Disease - WA Urban Site : This recently completed cohort study involved participants at Princess Margaret Hospital who were prescribed BPG for secondary prophylaxis of RHD. Dry blood spot (DBS) samples & throat swabs were collected from each child.

DBS samples were used to measure plasma penicillin levels & group A streptococcal antibody titres immediately prior to BPG administration & at pre-specified time points within each BPG cycle.

Throat swabs were also cultured to determine the presence of Strep A infection.
